CLR is back in Detroit for the 3rd year in a row and hosting yet another official Movement Festival afterparty. This year we move to a new location, the legendary Saint Andrew's Hall, where label head Chris Liebing will be joined by a top notch lineup of guests including Marcel Dettmann, Radio Slave, Drumcell, Tommy Four Seven, Bryan Kasenic and CLR's visual artist OKTAform.
Over the past week, CLR has been releasing a series of short interviews with each of the artists. CLR's visuals artist OKTAform is up next...
How would you describe the essence of what Detroit stands for?
Detroit stand for rawness. It strips away all the fluff of other events and gets techno and its surrounding genres back to their roots.
What haven't you done in Detroit that you would like to do this year?
I hope to get some time to relax and take it in this year. While I’m the most at home being behind the buttons, controlling the environment.. I also want to take some time to experience it as an attendee. It’s in that mode that new ideas are born as I’m inspired by others.
What sets this festival apart from the rest?
Movement is special because it happens right where techno was born. Some people understand the nostalgia and take it in that way, while other younger attendees may not even understand the history, but its served to them inherently. There are cultural, geographical and social reasons how techno came about here and you can’t wash that away. Its here and you are experiencing the festival and after parties within it..
You have been travelling with the CLR crew quite a bit lately, do you have something special in store for the event?
Yes.. visually things are getting real.. More realism and and more real time control is what I’m striving for lately. I’m also playing with more human themes that should make make people go WTF!
Do you do mainly do Techno events and how do they inspire your visual ideas?
Artistically I do many things, everything across the board, however as OKTAform - I just do techno. Even within techno I try to be very selective what I represent and what represents me. I might be giving away too much here but; Techno is the only musical genre that can literally bring me the point of tears. So the OKTAform project has been all about merging my visual ideas which come natural to me with that which inspires me the most.. TECHNO.
