Back in the D with ... Bryan Kasenic

    May 22, 2013

CLR is back in Detroit for the 3rd year in a row and hosting yet another official Movement Festival afterparty. This year we move to a new location, the legendary Saint Andrew's Hall, where label head Chris Liebing will be joined by a top notch lineup of guests including Marcel Dettmann, Radio Slave, Drumcell, Tommy Four Seven, Bryan Kasenic and CLR's visual artist OKTAform.

Over the past week, CLR has been releasing a series of short interviews with each of the artists. The Bunker's Bryan Kasenic is up next...

Is there a track that defines Detroit Techno for you?

Detroit Techno has such a huge canon of amazing tracks, that I really don’t think I could narrow it down to one. Daniel Bell, Carl Craig, Jeff Mills, Anthony Shakir, Underground Resistance, Drexciya and of course Juan, Kevin, and Derrick have all produced bodies of work that help define it for me, but really even that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Is there a modern track that you consider runs along the same lines of Detroit Techno?

I think Luke Hess’ most recent album and Erika’s forthcoming LP on Interdimensional Transmissions both give a good feel for where Detroit is at the moment.

What are your feelings about the current EDM hype in the States and how do you think it affects the underground scene?

I am glad more people are listening to electronic music. The huge EDM festivals and events and people who go to them seem very much removed from my own events (The Bunker). Time will tell if it has a huge affect on us, but so far I would say it has not.

How do you feel about playing in a historic venue like the Saint Andrews Hall and do you have any memories of prior experiences in this venue?

I have actually never performed at Saint Andrew's before, but have been there many times over the years. My favorite memory there would be the Plus8 10 Year Anniversary event in October of 2000. Truly mind-bending night!

How did your performance come about and do you have any prior associations with Chris Liebing and/or CLR?

I have never been involved with CLR in the past, but I was honored to be asked to be part of an event with such an incredible lineup, and quickly accepted when asked.
